Rosary Mysteries in Art

“To recite the rosary means to learn to gaze on Jesus with his Mother’s eyes, and to love Jesus with his Mother’s heart.”

—  Saint Pope John Paul II  —

The Divine Mysteries contained in the Rosary are gateways and focal points for communion and dialogue with God. Great artists throughout the two millennia of Christianity have been inspired by them to create timeless and beautiful works of art. Our current age provides an untold opportunity within Christian history by presenting access to these masterpieces. A small selection is presented here as an enriching aid while praying the Rosary.

Suggestions for Using Art While Praying the Rosary

  • Great for praying a family Rosary, especially for young children. Sitting still can be hard! Having a picture for a child opens up the mystery and helps the child reflect. Ask the child after each decade something he or she noticed in the painting or something that God spoke to the child about that Mystery.
  • As a catechetical tool — Masterpieces like those in this slideshow instruct us in the truths of our Catholic Faith. Young or old, learned or just beginning instruction in the faith, the Holy Spirit has something to reveal to us all.
  • Screen cast — Most mobile devices have a screen cast function (e.g. Screen Mirroring on Apple devices using AppleTV, Screen Casting on Google devices using Chromecast). Use this function to enlarge the artwork while praying in a larger group.
